Personal development is a process of self-assessment of one’s skills and qualities developed with years of experience and goals set to improve employability. Enhancing quality of life, and taking effective decisions and choices are important to develop powerful personal skills.
Of the many things we choose for ourselves during the course of developing our skills set; personal development is one of the tools put into action. However, personal development can be strategized into a few steps;
- Before doing anything you can figure out and clarify the important values for yourself in terms of employment.
- It is always better to note things down and work on them time to time. For your convenience formulate a statement which states the type of person you are in general which will help you create a path to achieve the goals you set for yourself.
- The next thing in your basket is to determine your area of excellence. The areas you are good at and the skills needed to perform beyond your expectations.
The importance of personal development:
All individuals have some kind of personal development need identified in them. It occurs through a process of needs and may also change with time. This process is a structure suggested by Maslow in his hierarchy of needs.
Abraham Maslow suggested that individuals have different needs and it develops in a form of hierarchy where when one level is satisfied another can be developed. This change is cyclical and needs motivational factors to support the hierarchy.
The bottom level of need is physical which involves need to be fed, clothed and accommodated. The following need is described as safety needs in both economical and physical sense. The third category is of social needs. Social needs of belonging, social groups, attachment and recognition are important factors for personal development to avoid conditions of depression, anxiety, loneliness and have good relationships with your family and peers. The fourth focus area is esteem needs. Esteem focuses on personal worth, when people feel valued by others upon their participation, accomplishments, professional activities and performance. People who satisfy their esteem needs achieve self-esteem and feel confident about themselves and their abilities. Together esteem and social needs contribute towards making up psychological needs in the hierarchy.
The most important of them all is self-actualization needs. Self-actualization is the idea of self-fulfillment; to reach one’s full potential and do everything you are capable of doing. Self-actualization is different for all and is expected to change as other needs change with time.
Personal development can be managed through active planning. The planning process starts with the development of a personal vision to motivate yourself and find a purpose to act upon. Later you should be clear with the path to take to get there. This needs you to be more realistic and target for improvements. Furthermore, the improvement process takes into account improving performance through learning and development. Also, polishing your skills by opting for various formal and informal trainings, courses, mentoring sessions and direct learning from your own experience.
Personal development should be in your records at all times by noting down the key developments on your page and the skills reflected upon which proves useful for self-motivation. Regular reviews and revision will give you an edge over others since all your personal development areas will be in your records too. The more you prioritize it, the better development activities will emerge from your directed goals.
