Using Herzberg’s Theory to increase Motivation in Class
Herzberg, a motivational theorist, stated that the productivity of employees is dependent on two factors hygiene factors and motivators. According to Herzberg’s theory hygiene factors only help to remove the dissatisfaction associated with the work, and whereas the motivators would increase the productivity. Although this theory was developed by studying employees, the findings of it can be applied to improve motivation of students in classrooms.
Our classrooms have been quite similar across the globe for a very long time. For generations, students have been going through a similar setting in a classroom, which is a room filled with chairs and desks, and a teacher’s table alongside a white/blackboard. However, the things outside the classrooms have transformed greatly. The typical classroom may not have an impact on the motivation levels of students to learn but bringing changes to the classroom will remove the dissatisfaction of students.
There is a number of ways which can be applied to increase both the hygiene and the motivational factors in the classroom. A modern classroom should be able to accommodate the needs of the modern students and reflect the changes that have happened in the outside world. If schools can do this effectively, the hygiene factors according to the Herzberg’s theory will be improved and this satisfaction levels will increase. Schools are already on this track, today we do see the use of multimedia, laptops, computers, e-books and other equipment to aid students in learning. Students using technology to learn in classrooms would not have worry about carrying their books and managing notes all the time. They can have these saved digitally, and access their books and notes online from anywhere, removing the barriers to learn from home or schools only.
The motivation of students in the classroom largely depends on the teacher. Teacher’s need to have qualifications for managing the classrooms. There are various diplomas and certificates in education that teachers can have to improve learning in classrooms. Such as PTLLS course, CTLLS course, DTLLS course. Such courses will provide teachers with the skills and knowledge required to manage the learning process in classrooms. These certificates would allow teachers to apply theories that they would learn in these courses. Also, they can apply principles and models of learning to improve learning in class, be able to improve communication assessment to planning inclusive teaching and learning.
Such teacher training would also help teachers to test with new teaching styles. Worldwide, institutes are taking different approaches to how students will be taught in classes. Recently there has been more focus on “flipped” classrooms. In which students use online platforms to learn at their own pace and use the time in schools to finish up homework and discuss the problems they may be encountering; the teacher’s task is to be the facilitator and to be a guide.
Another teaching style that has been popular and has gained attention is teaching through games. In this, students work in teams and are involved in playing games together. This allows the students to be more interactive and motivated in the class, as they are already familiar with games. For teachers, the classroom management skill would come in handy when implementing a different teaching style in classrooms. Majority of which largely depends on the teacher training. That would allow them to move away from the clockwork classroom routine and have a more engaged and better-managed classroom.
